Tulum Water Guardians

Children receive Art of Conservation Creative Learning Kits - I'll explain more about the kits in the next few weeks (they are so cool!) - which among the many things inside contain water monitoring sets. We are very fortunate to have water expert Olmo Torres-Talamante guide us through each of the eight basic water quality parameters: Coliform Bacteria, Dissolved Oxygen, BOD, Nitrate, pH, Phosphate, Temperature, and Turbidity.

The children lead Olmo, Manuel, and me to a nearby cenote - or sinkhole - found close to their school. Olmo begins with how to carefully collect a water sample followed by the first test.

I enjoy watching the kids work with Olmo once we arrive back at the school. They are intrigued by the testing method and tools. Olmo makes sure everyone gets involved.

Olmo helps children as they rank test results of one of the eight different water quality tests.

Olmo will return for more rounds of testing with the children before we finish our first pilot program at Primaria "Ignacio Zaragoza" in Macario Gomez. Students will present our findings to a group that gathers for our end-of-the-year party in December.

Zulmy carefully records test results.

I ordered the kits from Acorn Naturalists. They are designed by Earth Force which is committed to engaging youth and changing communities. www.earthforce.org
